Specialized Eating Disorder Therapy for Athletes

You’ve tried everything you can think of, but nothing’s sticking.

You might have tried therapy in the past and felt it didn’t quite resonate with your experiences. Maybe your provider didn’t understand the nuances of eating disorders, or couldn’t fully grasp the unique challenges you face as an athlete. Maybe you didn’t feel validated in the the fear that recovery might mean losing your edge, your body, or your place on the team.

But you’re still feeling…

  • Held back by your beliefs and behaviors.

  • Uneasy about the potential “consequences” of recovery.

  • Obsessive about what you’re eating or how you look.

  • Like your relationship with food is affecting your performance, not just your peace of mind.

What We Treat

Eating disorders show up differently in every athlete. At Stride Counseling, we provide virtual, individualized therapy for athletes navigating:

  • Anorexia nervosa: restriction, fear of weight gain, and a distorted relationship with food and body image.

  • Bulimia nervosa: cycles of binging and compensatory behaviors like purging, laxative use or over-exercising.

  • Binge eating disorder: recurring episodes of eating that feel out of control, often followed by shame or guilt.

  • Orthorexia: an unhealthy fixation on "clean" or "correct" eating that starts to take over daily life.

  • ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder): extreme food avoidance not driven by body image, but by sensory issues, fear, or lack of interest in eating.

  • RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport): chronic underfueling that affects performance, hormones, and long-term health. Learn more about specialized RED-S therapy here.

Eating disorders can affect athletes of any gender, age, body size, sport, or competition level. There is no sport where the risk is zero.

At the end of the day…

I want you to know that your body does not dictate your success. Your hard work and dedication to your goals does. Whatever it is that you’re experiencing, you deserve to take pride in your achievements beyond your body.

We use evidence-based approaches, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help you build practical coping skills, reduce compulsive behaviors, and reconnect with what matters to you, both in your sport and outside of it. Therapy is collaborative and sport-informed. We understand that recovery doesn't mean giving up your identity as an athlete, and we won't ask you to choose between your health and your goals.

Your relationship with food is paramount to your performance as an athlete, and your wellbeing as a human. We strive to provide eating disorder therapy that is evidence-based and leads to long-term results, not just short-term symptom relief.
